Visual Arts

We believe that every human being, young and old, has a need for and desire to express themselves in a creative and original manner. The visual arts provide a unique platform for this. Creativity is a frame of mind and an approach to life. It is the capacity to experiment and play, to take informed risks, to plan and anticipate, to view matters from various points of view, and to overcome one’s own fear of failure. Through the visual arts curriculum of the PYP, MYP, and IB Diploma programme we aim to foster these attributes in our students.

Visual art as an independent subject is offered at BBIS from Grade 3 through 12 and instructed by specialist teachers in art studios. Visual art is a mandatory subject in Grades 3 through 8 and instructed 80 minutes a week. In Grades 9 and 10 students have the option to choose between music and visual art, which then is taught for 160 minutes a week. BBIS offers visual art both on a Standard Level (option A and B) and High Level (option A and B) in the IB Diploma program.

The art teachers provide instruction and practice in the use of materials, techniques, tools, skills, and concepts. The ultimate goal is to develop the ability to apply the elements and principles of art to create, discuss, and appreciate works of art. The curriculum develops cyclically, with skills and concepts being introduced and revisited throughout the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma program.

The production and appreciation of the visual arts provide a substantial vehicle for realizing diversity in individuals, societies, and cultures. We feel strongly about the fact that visual arts at BBIS provide a dynamic forum for expression and discussion, for acquiring skills and techniques, and for constant interaction with the values and preferences of different cultures.

The visual arts department strives to develop and maintain a stimulating, calm, safe, and challenging learning environment, in which communication is based on encouragement, trust, respect, and tolerance. We actively seek learning opportunities outside the classroom and make every possible effort to tap into the vast Berlin/Potsdam museum and gallery scene.
