Human Rights Club
In 1948, in the wake of World War II, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These rights are the backbone to the modern-day foundation of freedom, justice and global peace. The declaration was the first international legal effort to limit the behaviour of states and impress upon them duties to their citizens and fellow countries.
Here at BBIS, we are a community from many diverse backgrounds, languages and religions. We all have different pasts which at some point have brought us face to face with human rights; whether in person, through one another or through the media.
The Human Rights Club’s mission is to raise awareness of human rights issues as well as to raise money to help those who are less fortunate. The Human Rights Club has both middle and high school students and is lead by Mr. Chamberlin and Ms. Hinton. We work closely with Mr. Brodie and have helped raise money for Habitat for Humanity.
Last year the Human Rights Club organized the Move-a-Thon and ‘Toastie for Haiti’ through which money was raised in order to help Haiti after the earthquake. This year we hope to continue to have students take an active approach in school fundraisers.
