English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The EAL department at BBIS is committed to providing the highest level of English language instruction and support to meet the needs of our diverse student population. In all three sections of the school, Elementary, Middle and High, a team of highly qualified English language teaching professionals provides both pull-out instruction and in-class support to deliver a comprehensive and inclusive programme. Entry and exit to and from the EAL programmes in the school are determined by a combination of placement testing, proficiency testing using the MACII and teacher input.

Elementary School EAL

In the Elementary School we offer two forms of EAL instruction and support. Students who have beginner to high-intermediate English language proficiency are withdrawn from their mainstream classes five times per week to receive English instruction from an EAL teacher in small groups. More proficient students receive in-class support from our English language teaching assistants, which means that during English Language Arts time they receive between two to three periods of support in their homeroom class. The teaching assistants also provide support for all levels of proficiency in the mainstream classes during PYP unit time.

Middle School EAL

In the Middle School, grades 6-8, students are following the Middle Years Programme (MYP). In the MYP, students requiring EAL instruction and support, follow the English B programme of instruction which is delivered by an EAL teacher. The English B programme focuses on developing English language skills alongside learning similar content to the mainstream English class. This means that students study similar literature, cover the same topics and focus on the same areas of interaction as their peers in Language A while continuing to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. In addition to receiving English B instruction, EAL students receive in-class support from an EAL teacher in Humanities and Science and usually attend Study Hall. Study Hall is held during the French and Spanish teaching periods, and allows the students to receive further support in academic subjects, get homework and project help and to work on improving research and study skills.

High School EAL

In Grades 9-10, which are the final two years of the Middle Years Programme (MYP), we offer a Language B programme to students who have English as an additional language. In classes of up to 8 learners, a programme is delivered which focuses not  only  on the traditional language skills of grammar, vocabulary and comprehension but also on the development of literacy skills as the course aims to cover the same areas of interaction as Language A classes. This includes studying broadly the same novels, plays and poems as mainstream English classes but in a more accessible format. In addition to this, EAL students usually attend Study Hall classes instead of studying a second foreign language or Drama. This is of great benefit to learners who may need extra help and/or time with homework. EAL staff also provides in-class support and modifies all forms of assessments for our students in Humanities and Science.
