Thursday, 2 February 2012 saw Grade 3 students looking quite different. It was the day of the annual art show, the culmination of eight weeks of study, and the students were dressed as the artist or culture they had researched. Many famous artists could be spotted, while lesser known artists were also introduced. The Heizhaus was transformed into an amazing art gallery as the students presented the art they had reproduced as well as the art they had created in art class and in homeroom. The students proved themselves quite knowledgeable as they discussed their chosen artist’s life, the influences in her/his art, and the process they went through in their own art work.
Thanks to the generosity of the BBIS community, the Human Rights Club was able to deliver approximately 25 boxes of donations to an aid organization known as the “Arche”. On 17 December, students of the club travelled to Berlin-Hellersdorf to deliver the toys and coats that were donated by BBIS families over the course of two months. As an organization that reaches out to help children in need, the “Arche” in Hellersdorf supports hundreds of children who face socio-economic challenges. About 60% of the families that live in the Hellersdorf district depend upon welfare programmes and German social security. Due to financial constraints, many of the children who come to the “Arche” do not celebrate Christmas in their homes. In light of the complexity of the situation and the need for a long term solution, the BBIS community can be proud to have been able to contribute to a happier Christmas for these children.
As part of the English and Humanities curriculum all grade 7 students visited the "Gedenkstätte Sachsenhausen" Concentration Camp on 9 December 2011. In their lessons they had studied Anne Frank and worked on a project about genocides. During their visit, the students were shown around by professional guides who explained the history of the camp and answered questions. The tour guides as well as the teachers accompanying the students were very impressed by the many insightful questions the students asked and by how engaged they were. When the group returned to BBIS, students had a chance to discuss what they had experienced, and created peace doves for a mural that will be put up in the Middle School.
