Berlin International Music Project
Students from five international schools (Berlin Brandenburg International School, Berlin International School, International School Villa Amalienhof, Berlin British School, and Nelson Mandela School) will be joining the international music project in spring 2012 located at BBIS. The idea is to bring together musicians of a similar level to perform in vocal and instrumental groups. This is a great opportunity for BBIS students to get together in a joint music making project with other students. The two previous concerts in 2010 and 2011 were wonderful examples of what can be achieved when schools collaborate and pool their talented students. Like last year, there will be five music groups: Junior Choir, Junior Orchestra, Senior Choir, Senior Orchestra, and a Jazz Ensemble.

German Recognition of the MYP
Very good news! After much deliberation the “Kultusminister-
konferenz” (KMK) is prepared to recognise the MYP as equivalent to a German “Mittlerer Schulabschluss”. Recognition has only been given to a small group of German international schools (including BBIS as the only one in the Berlin-Brandenburg region).
Basically, in order to qualify a student has to have attended school full time for at least 10 years, has to do one subject in each of the 8 subject groups as well as the Personal Project, and has to have sufficient German. In order to get a normal school leaving certificate (aged 16) a student should get 36 points from the maximum of 63 (same as IB regulations).
In order to get a certificate to enable a student to go onto a "Gymnasium" grammar school, he/she must receive 45 points (including at least 15 points from the following 3 subjects: Mathematics, Language A and Language B).

ES Winter Concert
On 8 December, grades 1-5 will gather for their annual Winter Concert. This year the children will be singing songs from around the world with grade 1 focusing on Europe, grade 2 on South America and the Caribbean, grade 3 on North America, grade 4 on Asia and grade 5 on Africa. This whirlwind trip should be entertaining and a great way for all of us to be exposed to world music.
The concerts organized at BBIS are very important in giving each child the opportunity to perform and feel good about it. As such, they build self-confidence and esteem. Also they expose the children to wide varieties of music styles through experience which is the best way to learn. They give an opportunity to make music together, showing both the harmonic possibilities of accompanied melodies and the positive social aspects to making music. They also teach the students to respect their peers and listen (patiently) to their performances.
