Visual Arts

We believe that every human being, young and old, has a need for and desire to express themselves in a creative and original manner. Creativity is a frame of mind and an approach to life – and a clear expectation in the business world of today. It is the capacity to experiment and play, to take informed risks, to plan and anticipate, to view matters from various points of view, and to overcome one’s own fear of failure. Through the visual arts curriculum of Early Education, the PYP, MYP, and IB Diploma and Career programmes we aim to foster these attributes in our students.

Art teachers provide instruction and practice in the use of materials, techniques, tools, skills, and concepts. The ultimate goal is to develop the ability to not only apply the elements and principles of art to create, discuss, and appreciate works of art, but to also develop an increasingly important trait in today's society - creative confidence. Our curriculum is developed cyclically, with skills and concepts being introduced and revisited throughout our programmes 

The production and appreciation of the visual arts provide a substantial vehicle for realizing diversity in individuals, societies, and cultures. We feel strongly about the fact that visual arts at BBIS provide a dynamic forum for expression and discussion, for acquiring skills and techniques, and for constant interaction with the values and preferences of different cultures.

We actively seek learning opportunities outside the classroom and make every possible effort to tap into the thriving local arts and culture scene throughout Berlin and Potsdam. 

Design

Design surrounds us. Everything made by humans has been designed and created with technology. Design includes the materials, knowledge, and processes required to create all the gadgets, products, and structures we use every day.

Design at BBIS links to a wide array of professions. This is because Design classes involve much more than computing: students gain exposure to areas such as Architecture, Graphic Design, Product Design, Engineering and Digital Film Making.

The use of a variety of computer software helps students document, visualise, and produce their work. Current Design students draw in three dimensions, create movies, manipulate pictures, and research and document their ideas and thoughts while learning the importance of visual thinking, communication and story telling. 

MYP Design

The holistic approach of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) to teaching and learning acknowledges that inquiry and problem solving contribute to students’ development of thinking skills and strategies. MYP Design aims to provide the means and the context to help students become skilful problem solvers who appreciate the role of technology in everyday life and all aspects of society, and who can respond critically and resourcefully to real?life challenges.

The MYP Design course intends to: challenge all students to apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve problems in design; encourage students to explore the role of design in both historical and contemporary contexts; and raise students’ awareness of their responsibilities as world citizens when making decisions and taking action on design issues. Design is one of the eight subject groups in the MYP with defined aims, objectives, and assessment criteria.

Inquiry and problem solving are at the heart of MYP Design. During the five-year course, students are expected to solve problems using design. But the solution is only part of the process: Design uses the "design cycle" as the model for thinking about and investigating problems as students design, plan, create, and evaluate the products/solutions that they have generated. (A "product/solution" can be defined as a model, prototype, product, or system that students have generated independently.) Thus students become actively involved in the whole design process, rather than merely on the final product/solution.
