Last weekend the basketball season ended with the GISST tournaments for our varsity teams. Over the last three months, our teams have worked hard to prepare themselves for their tournament(s). They have been practicing twice a week and all teams played around five friendly games as well. It has been impressive to see how much our teams have improved in such a short time. All our teams had some familiar faces from the previous years and it is always good to see new students joining our teams!
The U14 Boys team went to St. Georges School Duisburg-Düsseldorf (STG) for their GISST tournament. Overall, the boys came in 5th place, having won four games and lost two. BBIS shocked the competition on Day 1, winning three games in a row and only losing to the hosts St. George’s by four points. We ended the competition by beating our cross-town rivals, BerIS, in the final seconds of the game thanks to a layup from Poldi. Coach Mr Grissett is extremely proud of how the boys performed.
The U14 Girls team had a great tournament at BerIS. After a very tough first day, we were at the bottom of our group. The girls rallied on Saturday, winning games against St. George’s and BerIS (who was top of our group) to make it to the 4th place overall. They have been an amazing group of girls to coach and special thanks to Casey for being one of the most encouraging and motivating captains I have ever seen.
The Varsity Boys played their ESC tournament at BBIS where the team placed sixth out of ten teams in a very competitive tournament. The boys beat Bavaria and Paris and lost to TASIS (Lugano, Switzerland), Milan and St. Julian's (Lisbon, Portugal). The Varsity Boys team wants to thank all the students, staff members and parents who came out to support them. Another big thank you has to go out to the 33 BBIS families who helped over the three days by hosting all the visiting students (81 students in total)!
One week later the team travelled to Munich to take part in their GISST tournament hosted by the Bavarian International School. On the first day of the tournament BBIS started with a tough game against Hannover which we unfortunately lost by 9 points. After that round, the boys improved their game and beat Stuttgart, Bavaria JV, Franconia and Frankfurt. The team made it to the semi-finals, but lost that game against BerIS. We ended up playing against Hannover again for third place. It was a very close game and BBIS fought until the end, but lost this time by only 3 points. Well done to the boys for achieving fourth place in a twelve-team tournament!
Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team who won the ESC tournament held in Lausanne (Switzerland)! The tournament was very competitive. During the pool games, BBIS played four games. The girls managed to beat the ISZL and our rivals Bavaria. They also were pushed to their physical and mental limits against the two teams from Lisbon. Both games went to overtime, but the girls kept their cool, and were undefeated in their pool. BBIS then stepped up their game and won against Geneva to face the home team and reigning champions, Lausanne. The final was an exciting game to watch. The score was always close with both teams taking the lead at times during the game, but BBIS managed to stay calm and won by three points. Special mention to Lilly D., who won the Most Valuable Player award.
The Varsity Girls Basketball team had another win at the annual GISST tournament hosted by Stuttgart. The girls played outstanding in the pool play, beating Leipzig, Franconia, Berlin British School convincingly. Their last game of the day was against the home team Stuttgart, who had also won all of their games during the day. It was a very challenging game and the girls played hard right to the end, to take out the first place in their pool. On finals day BBIS played Hannover, Leipzig and then met Stuttgart again in the final. Although Stuttgart was determined and played tough defence, BBIS kept their composure. BBIS played a fantastic all round team game and won 41-35. The Varsity Girls Basketball team were undefeated this season and brought home gold trophies in our two main tournaments. This is also the second year in a row that BBIS has won the GISST tournament and the first time since 2014 that BBIS won the ESC tournament.
