BBIS Statement About Racism

Wednesday, 17 June, 2020

BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School stands firmly against racism and all forms of prejudice and intolerance. Our diverse community works together in active pursuit of inclusivity, understanding and justice for all.

Protests are happening around the world in response to the killing of George Floyd by police officers, a horrific event that was captured on video. The Black Lives Matter movement is imagining and creating a world where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive. Black lives matter to our school community. We are opposed to racism. But what action can we take?

The historic abuse of Black people throughout history has real consequences for Black people today. There are several things we can do right now. We can find out about the history of racism in our respective countries. We can read books and watch movies that depict Black voices and experiences. We can speak out when we hear racist and prejudiced comments, or witness an injustice. We can accept that we will not always get it right – author Ijeoma Oluo says that “anti-racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including in yourself. And it’s the only way forward.”

The more we understand about the history of racism, the deeper will be our respect and empathy for people who experience it, and the better prepared we will be to challenge racism, prejudice and intolerance, and work to create an equitable future for all.
