In a recent World Economic Forum report, it was stated that an estimated 65 percent of students entering school today will have jobs that do not yet exist. For us as educators, this raises the question of how we prepare our students for the future and how relevant our approaches to learning at BBIS are.

Language is a tool to unlock the world; we need language to construct meaning and, through communication, find our place in the different societies we are part of. The more languages we speak the more doors we can open, the more opportunities we discover.

Congratulations to all students from grade 6 to 12 who were involved – on and off the stage – in last night’s performance of “Annie”. It was a truly fantastic show, with numerous special moments, very skilfully choreographed group performances and stunning solos. The audience could see, hear and feel how much passion and preparation had gone into this performance. As one parent mentioned after the show: “It is things like this that really make BBIS special. You should all be very proud.”

It feels like we are hurtling towards the end of the 2016-17 academic year. This is, of course, also the time for closing of a significant chapter in the lives of our graduating students. It’s a time I greet with mixed emotion. While it is always sad to farewell the students, it is also exciting as I contemplate the potential of each person as he or she moves on to the next stage of life, however that may play out.

Language is not only a tool that helps us to connect and communicate with others, it is also vital for us as humans to express our thoughts and feelings. Studying several languages is something we encourage all of our students to do, and many of them not only speak their home language, English and German, but also study French, Spanish or Mandarin. Why do we put so much effort into language development at BBIS?

At a PTA Coffee Morning earlier in the academic year, the CAS Coordinator presented to parents on the CAS programme. The information provided in the session was very important in that it enabled parents to see what was required by the students and provided an opportunity to see how they could support their son or daughter over the 18 months of the programme.
