BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School is an independently run, state-approved, inclusive, English-medium day and boarding school serving the internationally-minded community of Germany’s capital region and beyond. As one of the Europe’s leading International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, BBIS proudly offers three IB programmes in the Primary, Middle and Diploma years of schooling. In the current school year 2023/24 our school teaches about 900 students who represent more than 65 nationalities.

BBIS has an opening for a IB PYP Coordinator / Primary School Teacher (f/m/d).

Summary of the Role

The BBIS IB PYP Coordinator is an innovative, student-centred, and inspirational curriculum leader who will help BBIS achieve its ambitious aspirations as one of the leading schools in Europe. The IB PYP Coordinator ensures the mission of BBIS is supported in coordination of the IB PYP and that the BBIS Definition of Learning and Learning Principles permeate the curriculum. The IB PYP Coordinator is a member of the Primary Leadership Team and they report to the Primary Principal. They lead teachers in the appropriate implementation and delivery of the IB PYP, the coordination and development of the Early Eudcation to Grade 5 programme, and in whole school planning. A thorough understanding of the school’s programs inform their decisions.They utilise effective problem-solving techniques and display a collaborative leadership style, working closely with the Primary School Principal, the Primary School Deputy Principal, all Primary teachers, and Learning Assistants to foster an inclusive and enriching learning environment for all. They fulfill a range of duties and responsibilities to attend to the whole child and to ensure the smooth day to day running of the school.

Experience
  • Three or more years of experience as a pedagogical and curricular leader
  • Expertise / experience in the implementation of the IB PYP
  • Coaching / mentoring experience
  • International teaching and leading experience
  • Impactful educator with an innovative and solutions focused, flexible attitude

It is an expectation that the PYP Coordinator:
  • Has extensive knowledge and experience with delivery and leadership of the IB PYP
  • Ensures that the Primary School has a well articulated Program of Inquiry and curriculum that align with the IB ATL (Approaches to Teaching & Learning)
  • Supports the teachers responsible for, and the students involved in, the IB PYP Exhibition


Responsibilities of the Role

This role directly links to our strategic aims and definitions of learning and has responsibilities in the following areas:



Curriculum & Assessment
  • Is the curriculum leader for the Primary School, responsible for all aspects of curriculum development
  • Lead the process of developing or reviewing the Primary School’s curriculum documents and works in partnership with Secondary curriculum leaders to ensure curricular articulation
  • Ensure that the curriculum promotes students making connections, thinking conceptually and critically, and reflecting on their own learning
  • Propose changes deemed necessary in the interest of better implementation and delivery of the IBPYP
  • Ensure that the curriculum is mapped, accessible and easy to understand using the relevant BBIS systems
  • Ensure assessment and reporting calendar is balanced and applied
  • Organize (with Admin support) assessments (which could include external tests like MAP or ISA) and oversee where applicable the standardisation of internal assessments
  • Facilitate conversations with teachers, teams within the Primary School to review pertinent assessment data to support improved instructional programs for students
  • Contribute to the review and implementation of the reporting process
  • Documentation: Ensure that all curriculum documentation is up-to-date, implemented and available to pedagogical staff. Ensure that IB publications pertaining to the IB PYP are available to all staff members. Establish and maintain a record of completed IB PYP planners and IB PYP Exhibition documentation
Teaching & Learning
  • Support transition of new faculty with regard to access, understanding and training of new teachers
  • Coordinate professional development - Make recommendations regarding professional development opportunities on and off campus in accordance with the school’s budget, action plan and yearly goals Use past PD to plan future attendance to ensure equality of opportunity and to identify on-going needs, and to complete authorization and program evaluation forms. Suggest workshops and conferences to management and staff and attend PD events like regional conferences to keep abreast of general educational and IB developments
  • Ensure that teaching and learning are differentiated to meet students’ needs and to ensure there is both vertical and horizontal articulation of the curriculum
  • Lead the learning and implementation of teaching and learning policies and procedures (example: but not limited to, academic integrity, language policy, assessment policy,)
  • Promote conceptual, inquiry based learning
  • Use data to identify, track and support student progress and well-being and coordinate with Support Services to arrange intervention and follow up
  • Use data as evidence to improve teaching and learning
  • To facilitate data protocols for internal and external standardized assessments
  • Provide mentorship for faculty members as required by the relevant German ministry/authorities
Supporting teacher growth
  • Prioritize people and relationships, support development of trusting teams and promote mutual respect and collaborative practice
  • Coach teachers on impactful concept-based inquiry practices, personalized and collaborative learning, and IB-mandated policies
  • Visit teachers’ classrooms to model, co-teach, and / or observe
  • Facilitate data-driven conversations to inform instructional decisions, including documentation, analysis, and reflections
  • Partner with educators to empower students to use learning evidence to set their own goals and measure their own progress
Communication
  • Promote and bring visibility to the positive outcomes of student experiences
  • Communicate regularly about the process of implementation and how all requirements of the IB concerning the implementation of the program are adhered to
  • Regularly conduct general sessions about the PYP for the school community and for interest groups within the community, for example, parent information sessions
  • Provide a liaison between the school and the IB. Respond to requests for information from the IB
  • Circulate all relevant information received from the IB and ensure that teachers and other staff are kept up to date with current developments in the program
  • Meeting students and parents as needed to discuss the PYP as part of the admissions and/or transition
School Improvement & Growth
  • Participate on and lead school improvement teams relating to teaching and learning informed by data
  • Accreditation & Authorizations – Lead teams through review and preparation of documentation required for authorization, evaluation or accreditations
  • Participate in teacher recruitment as appropriate
  • Working with the DP and MYP Coordinators on school wide matters relating to teaching and learning
  • Contribute to the school’s educational strategic planning, and the implementation of the plan
  • Participate in the development of the PYP action planning, manage and monitor the plans and participate in the formulation of the school’s strategic development plan and other requirements of accrediting bodies
  • Work with IB Coordinators to lead the development, implementation and continued use and revision of policies (some examples may include: school language policy, assessment policy, inclusion policy and academic integrity policy)
Student Life
  • Coordinate and plan IB PYP milestones (e.g. IB PYP Completion Ceremony and IB PYP Exhibition)
  • Support transition from the IB PYP to the IB MYP
  • Work with teams to help plan and execute special events relating to student learning and curriculum
  • Liaises with the Support Services team to ensure that all students flourish
