Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah visits BBIS

On 12 September 2025, BBIS was honoured to welcome Professor Abdulrazak Gurnah, recipient of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, for an inspiring Role Model Talk exploring the themes of identity, storytelling and belonging.

This special occasion marked the first Role Model Talk made possible by the BBIS Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to creating opportunities for students and enriching the BBIS learning community through initiatives that promote inclusion, innovation and global citizenship.

Held in the BBIS Sports Hall, the morning began with a reading from Professor Gurnah’s latest novel, Theft, which had been launched in German just one day earlier. His reflective words set the tone for a meaningful exchange about how stories shape our understanding of ourselves and others.

Following the reading, Grade 12 students led a thoughtful interview and discussion with Professor Gurnah, engaging him on themes such as identity, family and belonging in his writing. Their dialogue offered valuable insights into the creative process and the ways in which literature can help bridge cultures and experiences.

The event brought together students, staff and members of the BBIS community for a morning of reflection, learning and inspiration. It concluded with a book signing, where guests had the opportunity to meet Professor Gurnah personally and express their appreciation for his visit.

The BBIS Foundation’s support made this event possible, reflecting its mission to strengthen the school community and support opportunities that enrich learning, inspire curiosity and celebrate the international spirit that makes BBIS unique.
