Management & Board

The leadership team at BBIS is committed to upholding the school’s values – we strive to be pioneering, caring, reflective and excellent.

MEET OUR TEAM

Our leadership team is comprised of a Supervisory Board (elected according to our by-laws) made up of business, community and education leaders, parents, and two managing directors. The school’s Director and CEO is responsible for leading and ensuring the continuing high quality of our educational programmes; while our Business Director and CFO is responsible for administrative and financial management.

The principals of the Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as the heads of Student Support Services and Boarding, round out our management team. Meet them all below.

Management Team

Director/CEO

Nick Hazell joined BBIS in August 2019 as its Director, following leadership positions in Bangladesh and most recently in Jamaica. He gained his BSc at Liverpool University, his PGCE at Bristol University, and he holds an MA in Education (International Schools) from Oxford Brookes. Nick has been working within the field of education since 1992, and with International Baccalaureate programmes since 2000. Nick is married with two sons.

Business Director/CFO

Burkhard Dolata joined BBIS as CFO in January 2004. He holds a degree in General Business Administration and a German Business Diploma (Diplomkaufmann). Previously, he worked as Executive Software Specialist and Finance Director for international computer and technology companies. Until 2003, he was an Executive Board Member of a Residential Building Corporation in Berlin. Burkhard was born and raised in Germany, is married and has four children.

Secondary School Principal

Marika Farrell has a distinguished international education career having worked in Canada, China, the Ukraine, Tanzania and Japan. As an exemplary life long learner, she holds an MEd in International Education, the Certificate of International School Leadership from the Principals Training Centre, and is about to complete a Certificate in School Management & Leadership from Harvard. Marika has experienced the IB through multiple lenses, from student to parent, as well as educator and is currently the IB’s chief examiner for MYP physical and health education, and a CIS school visitor. Marika's son is currently studying at University of Toronto, Canada and she lives in Berlin with her partner.

Primary School Principal

Jonathan Butcher holds an MA in International Education, the IB Teacher Award, and IB Advanced Certificate from Bath University; as well as the Certificate of Advanced International School Leadership from the Principals Training Centre. Jonathan has taught internationally in schools in England, Australia, Switzerland, Thailand and South Korea, and most recently in Malta as principal. He is a CIS school visitor, and IB workshop leader. His wife is an early childhood teacher and they have two children, who both attend BBIS.

Head of Student Support Services

Jonathan Matthews-Hirsch (BA Hons, PGCE, MSc) joined BBIS in 2009 and has a career in education spanning over 20 years with the last 10 dedicated to the area of student support and special educational needs. In that time, Jonathan has taught in a variety of educational establishments ranging from mainstream schooling to special education, from Kindergarten to university level, and in diverse locations including London, Prague, Manila, Brighton and Berlin. In addition to heading the Student Support Services, he serves as Learning Support Coordinator.

Head of Boarding

Steve Crossley joined BBIS in January 2021 as Head of Boarding, having previously worked in boarding schools in the UK, Austria and the United States. Steve is a level 3 boarding practitioner and holds the BSA Boarding Management diploma, in addition to a BA in politics and history from Salford University and a PgDip in pastoral care, guidance and pupil support from the University of Aberdeen. Steve is married with two daughters.

Attorney-at-Law from Germany (Potsdam), three children at the school 1996-2016, board member since 2001.
Markus Beran
Banker from Germany, two children at the school, board member since 2013.
Dr. Martin Hintze
Entrepreneur from Germany, two children at the school, board member since 2021.
Prof. Dr. Daniel Koerfer
Historian from Switzerland, teaching at the FU Berlin, two children at the school 1996-2009, board member since 2015.
Thomas Schädler
Former school director from Switzerland with broad experience in the international school sector, board member since 2018.
