MANAGEMENT & BOARD
BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School GmbH is a state certified day and boarding school and is a registered non-profit organization. The five member Supervisory Board is elected according to by-laws.
Business, community and education leaders join our parents and two managing directors to ensure BBIS maintains its commitment to our values – pioneering, caring, reflective and excellent.
The board of directors created positions for two directors. Nicholas Hazell, School Director and CEO, is responsible for leading and ensuring high quality of the educational programmes. Burkhard Dolata is the Business Director and CFO responsible for administrative and financial management.
Nick Hazell joined BBIS in August 2019 as its Director, following leadership positions in Bangladesh and most recently in Jamaica. He gained his BSc at Liverpool University, his PGCE at Bristol University, and he holds an MA in Education (International Schools) from Oxford Brookes. Nick has been working within the field of education since 1992, and with International Baccalaureate programmes since 2000. Nick is married with two sons.
Burkhard Dolata started work as CFO in January 2004. He holds a degree in General Business Administration and a German Business Diploma (Diplomkaufmann). Previously, he worked as Executive Software Specialist and Finance Director for international computer and technology companies. Until 2003, he was an Executive Board Member of a Residential Building Corporation in Berlin. Burkhard Dolata was born and raised in Germany, is married and has four children.
Secondary School Principal - IB DP/CP Programme
Andrew Hand holds education degrees from Flinders University South Australia and joined BBIS in 2015 after a successful career with top positions at the Pembroke School Australia, the International School of Penang, the International School Gevena and recently at UNIS, New York. He is a also an active musician and leads our staff vocal ensemble.
Interim Secondary School Principal - IB MYP Programme
John Searle has extensive experience in national and international contexts. He began his international teaching career in 1983 in Tokyo at the American School, and from 1991 has worked in International Baccalaureate schools as a teacher and in diverse leadership roles. For the past eleven years he has held Head of School positions in Asia and Europe.
Primary School Principal
Jonathan Butcher holds an MA in International Education, the IB Teacher Award, and IB Advanced Certificate from Bath University. He has the Certificate of Advanced International School Leadership from the Principals Training Centre. Jonathan has taught internationally in schools in Australia, Switzerland, Thailand and South Korea, as well as England, and most recently in Malta as principal. He is a CIS school visitor, and IB workshop leader. His wife is an early childhood teacher and they have two children, who both attend BBIS.
Head of Student Support Services
Jonathan Matthews-Hirsch (BA Hons, PGCE, MSc) joined BBIS in 2009 and has a career in education spanning over 20 years with the last ten dedicated to the area of student support and special educational needs. In that time, Jonathan has taught in a variety of different educational establishments ranging from mainstream schooling to special education and from Kindergarten to university level. Jonathan has been employed both overseas and in the UK including such diverse locations as London, Prague, Manila, Brighton and Berlin. In addition to heading the Student Support Services, he serves as Learning Support Coordinator.
Dr. Frank H. Walter-von Gierke
Attorney-at-Law from Germany (Potsdam), shareholder of BBIS, three children at the school 1990-2016, board member since 2001
Banker from Germany (Kleinmachnow), two children at the school, board member since 2013.
Dr. Ulrich Vest
Chief Financial Officer from Germany (Berlin), one child at the school, board member since 2012.
Prof. Dr. Daniel Koerfer
Historian from Switzerland, teaching at the FU Berlin, two children at the school 1996-2009, board member since 2015.
Former school director from Switzerland with broad experience in the international school sector, board member since 2018.
